Etihad Airways has announced the introduction of a new regular service between Abu Dhabi and Barcelona, starting November 21, 2018. The route will initially be operated five times a week by a two-class Airbus A330-200 before becoming a daily operation on 31 March 2019.
Barcelona will become the second city in Spain served by Etihad Airways, complementing the airline’s current daily service to the capital, Madrid. The new link will provide business and leisure travellers with convenient timetables for travel between Abu Dhabi and Barcelona, as well as providing seamless connections through Abu Dhabi to major cities in the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, China, Japan, Korea and Australia.
Peter Baumgartner, Managing Director of Etihad Airways, said: “As one of the largest unserved markets in our Abu Dhabi base, Barcelona – a centre of culture, commerce, tourism, education, fashion and science – has witnessed a significant increase in demand for emirate travel, and for our entire network.
“We are delighted to announce the first direct link between these two major global centres. We are confident that it will be very popular with the UAE and customers in Barcelona, allowing us to extend our acclaimed flight service, hospitality and style to this vibrant Mediterranean city, and build on the flourishing cultural and commercial ties between the UAE and Spain.
The new service will be launched in time for the start of the Abu Dhabi Formula 1 Grand Prix Etihad Airways 2018, the largest sporting event in the Middle East, to be held from 23-25 November at the 5.55-kilometre-long Yas Marina circuit in the capital.
Etihad Airways has an extensive code-share partnership with Air Europa (UX) on the Spanish airline’s scheduled services from Madrid to Barcelona and 18 other major European cities.
